Legal Services at WE CAN
Through the generosity of Cape attorneys (click here for a list of our legal volunteers) who donate their time, WE CAN offers low/moderate income women a range of free legal services:
Individual 30-minute consultations on the legal issues involved in divorce; child custody and support; wills, estate and real estate; landlord-tenant problems; contract, debt and consumer issues; immigration; employment; personal injury; real estate and other civil matters. These consultations are held in the WE CAN office in Harwich Port and are conducted by appointment only. Call 508-430-8111 for more information or to schedule a consultation. (NOTE: These sessions are in high demand, so there may be a wait for an appointment.)
Legal Workshops, including:
Family Law Overview: "Everything You Wanted to Know about Family Law but were Afraid to Ask," a 2-hour workshop with a family law attorney, provides attendees with an overview of the major aspects of family law, including contested and uncontested divorce, child custody and support and guardianship of minors. Handouts including legal resources are given to each participant. Ample time is set aside for Q&A. Women seeking legal advice about aspects of Family Law are encouraged to attend this workshop prior to consulting an attorney or setting up a free 1-to-1 consultation with an attorney at WE CAN. At a recent workshop an attendee said: "I got my questions answered and now I know how to take the next steps."
"Divorce Boot Camp:" a 4-hour workshop offered periodically by an attorney with expertise in family law provides specialized help, such as how to prepare emotionally and financially for divorce, how to avoid paying for routine work that you can do yourself, navigating the Family Court system without an attorney, Q&A, and much more, including all essential forms and other materials. Each participant is given a CD with complete Boot Camp information (for those with no access to a computer, a printed copy of the contents of the CD is available for use in the WE CAN office). One attendee of a recent Boot Camp wrote: "The basics and so much more! Above and beyond my expectations; an amazing amount of very useful information ... best $10 I ever spent."
