Legal Services
Through the generosity of Cape attorneys who donate their time, WE CAN offers low and moderate income women a range of free legal services some of which include :
One-to-one 30-minute consultations with an attorney
specializing in one or more of these legal areas:
- employment,
- family law: divorce, child custody and support,
- wills and estates,
- real estate,
- landlord-tenant,
- contracts,
- debt and consumer issues,
- immigration,
- personal injury, and
- other civil matters.
Although we have weekly appointments, sessions are in high demand, so there is often a wait for an appointment.
These consultations are held in the WE CAN office and are conducted by appointment only. Call 508-430-8111 for more information or to schedule a consultation.
Legal Workshops, including:
Family Law Overview: "Everything You Wanted to Know about Family Law but were Afraid to Ask," a 2-hour workshop with a family law attorney, that provides attendees with an overview of the major aspects of family law, including contested and uncontested divorce, child custody and support, and guardianship of minors. Handouts, including legal resources, are given to each participant. Ample time is set aside for Q&A. Women seeking legal advice about aspects of Family Law are encouraged to attend this workshop prior to consulting with an attorney or registering for one of WE CAN's free one-to-one legal consultations.
A recent attendee summed up the workshop by saying, "I got my questions answered, and now I know how to take the next steps."
Divorce Boot Camp: a 4-hour workshop developed and facilitated by an experienced family law attorney who provides specialized help in such matters as: how to prepare emotionally and financially for divorce, how to avoid paying for routine work that you can do yourself, navigating the Family Court system without an attorney, and much, more. Each participant is given a CD with complete Boot Camp information including all essential forms and other materials. Time is set aside for Q&A.
Note: For those without access to a computer, a printed copy of the CD's contents is available in the WE CAN office.
One attendee of a recent Boot Camp wrote: "The basics and so much more! Above and beyond my expectations; an amazing amount of very useful information ... best $10 donation I ever made."

This two-hour workshop led by attorneys with DOR clarifies the role of the Department of Revenue Child Support Enforcement division, explains the child support process, and empowers women with information and advocacy strategies to work effectively on their own behalf.
