Through the generosity of Cape attorneys who donate their time, WE CAN offers low and moderate income women a range of free legal services some of which include:
One-to-one 30-minute consultations with an attorney specializing in one or more of these legal areas:
- family law: divorce, child custody and support
- wills and estates
- real estate
- debt and consumer issues
Although we have weekly consultations, sessions are in high demand, so there is often a wait for a consultation.
These one-to-one consultations are held in the WE CAN office Harwich Port, Hyannis at Cape Cod Child Development, and Falmouth at the Falmouth Service Center. They are conducted by reservation only. Call 508-430-8111 for more information or to schedule a consultation.
Family Law Overview: “Everything Women Want to Know about Family Law but Are Afraid to Ask,” a 2-hour workshop held regularly with a family law attorney, that provides attendees with an overview of the major aspects of family law, including contested and uncontested divorce, child custody and support, and guardianship of minors. Handouts, including legal resources, are given to each participant. Ample time is set aside for Q&A. Women seeking legal advice about aspects of Family Law are encouraged to attend this workshop prior to consulting with an attorney or registering for one of WE CAN’s free one-to-one legal consultations.
A recent attendee summed up the workshop by saying, “I got my questions answered, and now I know how to take the next steps.”
NEW OFFERING Fall 2017 – Preparing Your Financial Statement for Family Court: In this 2-hour workshop developed and led by attorney Anne Batchelder, learn how to prepare, file, and serve a Financial Statement AND learn how to evaluate one! For those who work for an employer, for themselves, or receive public assistance.
Legal Issues Facing Grandparents Raising Grandchildren: a 2.5-hour workshop held every May and co-sponsored by Cape Cod Neighborhood Support Coalition and the MA Commission on the Status of Grandparents Raising Grandchildren and presented by Lynn Girton, Vice Chair, MA Commission on the Status of Grandparents Raising Grandchildren.
*Divorce Boot Camp for Women: a 4-hour workshop held every few months, developed and facilitated by an experienced family law attorney who provides specialized help in such matters as: how to prepare emotionally and financially for divorce, how to avoid paying for routine work that you can do yourself, navigating the Family Court system without an attorney, and much, more. Each participant is given a CD with complete Boot Camp information including all essential forms and other materials. Time is set aside for Q&A.
One attendee of a recent Boot Camp wrote: “The basics and so much more! Above and beyond my expectations; an amazing amount of very useful information … best $10 donation I ever made.”
*Note: For those without access to a computer, a printed copy of the CD’s contents is available in the WE CAN office.
These workshops are held in different areas on the Cape. Please contact the WE CAN office at 508-430-8111 for more information.
