The WE CAN family welcomed Russell P. Morris (Rick) to the Board of Diectors at their April 29th meeting. Rick owns and operates RPM Carpets & Floor coverings in East Harwich. RPM Carpets was chosen as Mohawk Floorscapes Dealer of the Year for the Northeast Region in 2006, out of hundreds of stores. Current Magazine Fashion Show a Huge Success

Thanks to Amanda Converse and her team from Current Magazine, the Current Magazine Fashion Show Benefit for WE CAN, held at Cape Cinema, was a huge success. Not only was it the magazine's largest fashion audience, nearly a full house, the event was a great fundraising success, also. Models for the event were: June Bertucci, ABWA prsident; Pam Kukla, WE CAN Special Advisor; Kim Clark, and Sharon Hawkins, WE CAN BOD; Andi Genser, WE CAN Executive Director; Amy Levine, United Way President; Kim Lucas, Cape Cod Broadcasting; Kara Duff, WE CAN staff; Elaine Massey, WE CAN program participant and 2012 "W3" speaker, and her daughter, Youlanda Massey. WE CAN was presented with a $2,545 check from the evening's proceeds.

The Excelano Project Donates to WE CAN

The February 2nd evening of performance and poetry by the nationally recognized Excelano Project on Saturday evening, Feb. 2,at 8 p.m. was presented to a full house at the Cotuit Center for the Arts in Cotuit, and resulted in many requests for this to become an annual event and a $1,100 donation from the talented group of collegiates. WE CAN Collaborates with HECH to offer Rental Assistance

With funds from the Dennis Affordable Housing Trust, HECH is currently accepting applications for Rental Assistance to income qualified households who live, work, OR have child(ren) who attend school in Dennis. WE CAN will be working with the participants to assist them in transitioning into a more independent status. 8th Annual Day of Words, Wit and Wisdom

Our 8th annual "A Day of Words, Wit, and Wisdom" was a smashing success: the event income topped $65,000, attendance was at an all time high of 370 individuals, speakers were fantastic, and the sponsorship support was $36,000. Pictured to the left are our 2012 speakers: Anne LeClaire, our emcee extraordinaire, and authors Gregory Maguire, Marianne Leone and Gail Tsukiyama. All gave memorable presentations in addition to our fabulous Woman of the Year, Liz Walker. TD Bank has an excitedly easy way to support WE CAN; it’s called the Affinity Program. People who are TD Bank account holders can call or go into any TD Bank, and let them know you want WE CAN to be your Affinity Program non-profit. The program is totally anonymous: WE CAN doesn’t even know who signs up. There are no costs involved; in fact, the Bank actually pays you to belong! Congressman Keating Visits WE CAN

Nearly two dozen people gathered in the WE CAN offices to greet Congressman Bill Keating and to welcome him on his "tour" of the WE CAN offices: WE CAN staff, Board President Janet Weatherbe, many Board members, Special Advisors, volunteers, and program participants. "Were delighted to meet him and honored that he took the time to meet our program participants, volunteers, and other supporters to learn about our programs and services," Andi Genser, Executive Director, commented when reflecting on the event. Cape Cod Quilters' Benefit Raffle a Big Success

WE CAN Celebrates 10th Anniversary

In honor of WE CAN's 10th Anniversary Special Advisor, Ro Morrissey, lead a team of volunteers in creating a special signature quilt. The quilt was signed by the many volunteers, sponsors, program participants, and others involved with WE CAN over the years. Several signing events were scheduled - one had over 250 people in attendance. The unveiling and dedication is scheduled for the 10th Anniversary Celebration on Thursday, December 1st at the Cultural Center of Cape Cod, 307 Old Main St, South Yarmouth, MA . Financial Empowerment Funding

WE CAN’s new-for-2011 Financial Empowerment Sessions recently got a boost with funding from three local sources: Bank of America, TD Charitable Foundation, and Eastern Bank with program supporting donations of $7,500, $5,000, and $2,500, respectively. Their funds will be used specifically to support WE CAN's Financial Empowerment Program. The program has already served 56 women in 1:1 sessions this year. More info in PDF below.

Day of Words, Wit and Wisdom a Smashing Success

A sell-out crowd of 350 attended the 2011 7th annual Day of Words, Wit, and Wisdom event at Wychmere Harbor Club to hear authors: Jane Hamilton, Margot Livesey, and Andre Dubus III. WE CAN Board President Janet Weatherbe presented the Woman of the Year Award to Dorothy Stoneman, the founder of YouthBuild USA and former McCarthur Fellow. PathMaker Melinda Lancaster also shared her story to a standing ovation from the crowd. Esteemed local author Anne LeClaire was the emcee of the program, weaving together many strands into the day's theme of Imagination in writing and in life. With 35 sponsors contributing three times the sponsor income from 2010 along with essential in-kind services, this year's event will net more than $50,000 for WE CAN--about 25% of the organization's budget!

Sesuit Spring Spree Benefits WE CAN

Sesuit Harbor House joined forces with WE CAN to kick off the 2011 spring season with the first ever Sesuit Spring Spree. Held at the Sesuit Harbor House in East Dennis from 12-4, this event gave WE CAN an exciting opportunity to spread awareness of our new and ongoing programs, events, and workshops that carry out WE CAN's mission of empowering women to achieve lasting positive change. The Sesuit Spring Spree also offered the community & visitors alike a fun-filled feel good afternoon. Among the many activities were shopping the handmade crafts of local women artisans where 20% of all sales benefited WE CAN and the chance to enter raffles that yielded WE CAN 100% of the proceeds. And, in the kitchen was the opportunity to learn the secrets of Chef Jim, who gave cooking demonstrations using local seafood and of course, having those present sample them. Photo: WE CAN Executive Director Andi Genser is awarded a check by owner Kim Marchand for $1,000 thanks to all involved.
