Russell P. Morris (Rick) owns and operates RPM Carpets & Floor coverings in East Harwich. Rick started the business in the fall of 1992 in 1200 square feet of rented space in a strip mall. The only employees were Rick and his wife. The business grew steadily, and in 2005 Rick completed construction of his new almost 10,000 sf store. The business now employs nine full time and two part-time employees, as well as seven installation crews. RPM Carpets was chosen as Mohawk Floorscapes Dealer of the Year for the Northeast Region in 2006, out of hundreds of stores. Two of the criteria for the award are good business practices, and community service.
Although Rick spent his childhood traveling the world as the son of an Air Force pilot, his ties to the Cape are deep. His family returned to his grandfather’s house on Wychmere Harbor for vacations, from various locations in the world. The family returned to the Cape permanently in 1967, and he graduated from Harwich High School in 1968.
Rick served in the Air Force for four years, and then the Reserves for six years.
Rick has been quietly practicing philanthropy for all these years. Rick gives gifts of donations and gift certificates to dozens of organizations, with priority given to local groups and children. He has also helped to defray the costs of new flooring for countless churches and non-profits.
The Harwich Chamber of Commerce recognized Rick’s contributions with the Community Service Award in 2010. Rick served on the Harwich Chamber’s executive search committee for a new director. Rick is also a member of the Founders Circle of the Cape & Islands United Way, which represents the highest level of giving.
“I joined WE CAN because I believe I can help the organization grow in order to reach more women on Cape Cod who so need these services.”
