Diversity, Equity, Inclusion & Belonging
Statement of Principle

WE CAN works to empower women to build fulfilling, sustainable lives for themselves and their families. We believe that all people deserve to be valued for the qualities that make them the unique and singular individuals that they are. To fully live our values, we commit to be an intentionally diverse, equitable and inclusive organization.

WE CAN believes that lifting one group out of oppression is never at the expense of another group. We feel that the entire community benefits when everyone is provided equal and equitable opportunities and treated with fairness, respect, and justice. We believe in giving voice, influence, and power to those who have been marginalized. To create change we must start with ourselves.

Our vision for WE CAN is to provide an open community where everyone feels welcome, accepted, safe, heard, and valued. We strive to be an organization with a staff, board, volunteers, and participants that reflect and represent the communities we serve.

Turning this vision into a reality is an ongoing journey. We commit to making WE CAN a place where everyone, representing the full range of different social and ethnic backgrounds and different genders and sexual orientations, are encouraged to participate; where that diversity is more than welcomed, it is celebrated; where all people feel a sense of belonging whenever they interact with us, and where all aspects of our organizational culture are aligned with our values.

Paper Heart

To accomplish this, WE CAN will:

  1. Engage in a process of continuous learning and unlearning about systems of oppression, diversity, equity, inclusion/exclusion and belonging.

  2. Broaden our connections to, and outreach with, marginalized and minority communities.

  3. Assess and mitigate barriers that exist to participation with WE CAN for participants and volunteers.

  4. Ensure our organization reflects the diverse communities we serve.
